Hanging of the Greens
In December 2009, our Chancel Choir presented a program, “Festival Worship with Hanging of the Greens.” The program concluded with the inaugural preformance of “Gloria Allelluia,” written by Brad Krantz, a member of the choir. You can watch the video of that performance here.
Traditional Music
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir welcomes all singers from high school through adults to lead music in the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service. The growing choir of 40+ singers is dedicated to good sacred music and a wide variety of musical styles: classical (all periods of sacred literature), spirituals, 21st century compositions, hymn-based, and psalms. In addition to serving at the 11 a.m. worship service, the choir sings at several special liturgical services throughout the year, and will perform two major works every year.
Rehearsals are from 7 — 8:30 every Wednesday evening from in Knox Hall room 155 and we rehearse one half hour before the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday mornings. New members will be greeted with assigned folders and robes and a great welcome from the choir members! There are different levels of musicianship within this non-auditioned choir from accomplished soloists to those who are still mastering the skills of singing. We have a special place for you to serve God through music! Everyone is welcome!
Chapel Choir
The 8:30 a.m. traditional service hosts a variety of traditional music ranging from the Chapel Choir to various soloists and instrumentalists. The Chapel Choir sings two-four times a month with a warm-up rehearsal at 8 a.m. in the choir room. Music and schedules are available in advance. This is a great place to start especially if you have a busy work schedule and cannot work in Wednesday evening rehearsals with the Chancel Choir.
Chancel Handbell Choir
This is a three octave adult bell choir that rehearses from 6 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday evening before Chancel Choir in Knox Hall room 155. It's easy on the ringers’ schedules who are in both choirs. They ring once a month in the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service, and for special services. We hope to expand to four octaves.... and then on to a permanent five octave bell choir. Bells are great rhythm instruments — you have to be able to count!! They are also very musical instruments with a vast array of dynamics, musical styles, and sound techniques all the way from bell tower swings and mallets to martellatoes! It will be the most fun way you've ever served God through music!
Children’s Choirs
We have choirs for all ages! Having faith and serving God at an early age is important at Hyde Park. Children not only learn good music, they also have basic training to becoming good musicians:
* Rhythm in keeping the beat through simple rhythmic patterns and to count simple rhythms
* Concepts of high-low, loud-soft, fast-slow
* Note reading
* Hymns and Psalms
* Importance of being a part of a choir in attendance, behavior, sharing your talents, and the fun and joy or working together
The Alleluia Choir, directed by Janna Vincent & accompanied by Julie Schmidt includes Preschoolers thru first grade. They meet from 4:45 — 5:15 p.m. on Wednesdays in Knox Hall room 150. They sometimes join with the Junior choir for anthems, special songs and roles in musicals; they sing once a month in worship.
The Junior Chime Choir (Grades 4-5), directed by Penny S. Walsh, meets from 4:45 — 5:15 p.m. in Knox Hall room 155. These chimers love to ring under the direction of Penny Walsh! They are trained in rhythm, note reading, playing together as an ensemble, and how to serve God through instrumental music. They perform at the 11 a.m. Sunday traditional worship service once a month usually for the Prelude and also accompany the Junior Singing Choir on occasion.
The Junior Singing Choir (Grades 2-5), directed by Penny S. Walsh, meets on Wednesdays from 5:15 — 5:45 p.m. in Knox Hall room 155. This choir sings once a month in worship, presents a musical once a year, and occasionally joins with either the Alleluia Choir or the adult Chancel Choir for special anthems. They memorize hymns, chant psalms, play rhythm instruments with their singing, prepare the music for an entire worship service once a year, present a full-scale musical once a year, and learn how to be worship leaders. All children learn friendship and acceptance as a part of being in this choir and all are welcome with open arms!
Youth Choirs
Youth Bell Choir rings on Sunday evenings form 5:30 — 6:15 p.m. This dynamic group of ringers plays once a month in worship and on special occasions. Ages include middle school through high school.
