Cuba Mission Trip
The 2009 Cuba Mission trip consisted of 12 team members. The team traveled to Havana, Cuba, in July and assisted in the final repairs to a historic building given to the Methodist Church by the Cuban Government. The building was donated for the purpose of becoming the first Methodist Seminary in Cuba, and the team was blessed to see the first evidence of students using the finished parts of the building. The team had opportunities to interact with the locals at the worksite, the Methodist Center and at several church services. The team carried medical supplies, sporting goods, Bibles and clothing to provide to church members, and work tools and supplies for the worksite. In addition to work assignments, the team visited other churches and participated in worship services which were typically charismatic in nature, involving lots of singing and praise. Some services took an impromptu detour and were an exciting and vibrant witness of the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of the Cuban people. The love and spirituality of the Cuban people will steal your heart.
Future trips will be assigned by the Bishop of the Methodist Church in Cuba according to the needs of his people.

El Ayudante Mission in Nicaragua (adult mission trip) November 6-13
Hyde Park United Methodist sent a team of 28 adults into the mission field of Nicaragua in November 2009 to provide help and outreach to the poor and needy in and near the city of Leon. This was the fourth mission team in as many years to the same facility. The team works in partnership with the El Ayudante (www.nicamissions.com) mission in Leon providing aid in many areas. El Ayudante offers a base of operations for the U.S. mission teams who come to help in Nicaragua, which is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Team members conducted Bible lesson activities for preschool and elementary children at several locations and distributed food supplies to families in need. A doctor accompanied the group to help treat the sick. Construction activities included kitchen construction at a home and working on the security fence at a community center.
The mission team offered a presentation on their experience to the congregation, identified needs that could be the focus of future Hyde Park mission teams and recommended steps our church congregation can take to continue to Make God’s Love Real in Nicaragua.
Read about the team's experiences in Nicaragua on our blog Hyde Park Speaks.
For more information about the Nov. 6-13 mission trip to Nicaragua, contact Mike Alford. Prior to the trip, the mission team will be collecting donated items to take to Nicaragua. Click here for the 2010 mission trip flyer with more information about the trip and items needed.

South Africa Initiative
The South Africa Initiative is a multi-dimensional program designed to offer the opportunity to experience the fears, hurts, needs and hopes of the disadvantaged in South Africa. Through Faith Promise, Hyde Park United Methodist has supported four different ministries in South Africa during the last three years. Four teams have gone there during that period. The ministries are located in Johannesburg and its suburbs, and in the cities of Durban and Pinetown. The ministries are: For Love of Children, Come Back Mission, Central Mission Methodist Church, Pinetown Methodist Church and the Seth Mokitimi Seminary.
During the mission trips, the team met with United Methodist ministers, attended church services, visited preschools and spent time with indigenous people in their homes and gathering places. Home stays in a mixed-race community of Christian volunteers outside of Johannesburg were a “must.” In many ways, making such a trip is one extended worship experience that can take you to a new place on your spiritual journey. Without exception, it will leave an indelible imprint.
We are excited to announce, in partnership with Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, that we have met the goal to raise $24,000 for Come Back Mission. This money will be used by Come Back Mission to purchase a van to transport HIV/AIDS patients from Eldorado Park, South Africa, to the nearest clinic for treatment. Thanks to those whose donations are helping us transform lives, create Christian community and heal the world!

A message from Cuba
Hyde Park has traveled to Cuba for mission trips. This greeting comes from our "sister church" in Cuba. Those mentioned below have been to Cuba and visited with our pastor, Felipe R. Simón Rodríguez.
God be with you and your family.
We hope you are fine and enjoying the full blessings of the Lord. Our Church is good and always prays for you and remembers you. We are a blessing people because we have you as our sister church. Recently I returned of Havana where I was studying in the seminary by 20 days. But our church is growing and enjoying a good time of revival in the Spirit, and we know that it is just the beginning. We beg you that continue praying for us, and the construction of our “Garage.”
Please, Say hello to Drema, Elio, Linda, Brenda, Susan, Lisa and to all Hyde Park UMC.
In Christ’s love:
Pastor: Felipe R. Simon Rodriguez
Guanito MC.
