The Role of Prayer
The primary purpose of prayer is to engage us in an intimate, growing relationship with God. Prayer is the discipline by which we share our life with God, and God shares life with us.
Prayer is not magic, although there is mystery to it. Prayer is not ritual, although it is formed through the spiritual traditions of the church. Prayer is not a shopping list to send off to a cosmic Santa Claus to get what we want. Prayer is the way we allow our lives to become what God wants.
The lack of discipline in prayer is the same as lack of physical exercise. Our souls become flabby, unhealthy weak. When a crisis comes, we will not have the spiritual strength to face it without the strength the discipline of daily prayer provides.
